Shivering Homeowners Urged to Fit Energy-Efficient Windows
Property owners in the UK have been urged to install energy-saving windows during the current cold snap to save money on their heating bills.

LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, December 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- THOUSANDS of householders across the UK who are bearing the brunt of the big freeze could save up to GBP500 a year - by installing energy-efficient windows.
Properties with single-glazed frames or which had double glazing fitted before 2002 could make a huge saving on household heating bills.
And as well as saving money in the cold snap, the British Fenestration Ratings Council (BRFC) and double glazing giant Safestyle UK say householders will also be reducing their carbon footprint by replacing outdated windows with energy efficient ones.
A Safestyle UK spokesman said: "The cold snap has really taken hold and we are only in December. There are several months of cold weather to come and for homes with single glazing and older double glazing, it really is a no-brainer to get windows replaced for greater energy efficiency.
"It can save people literally hundreds of pounds a year on their heating bills. The Government's target of a 20% reduction in carbon emissions from each household is quite achievable.
"Add to this other simple energy-saving measures, such as insulating your home and turning down the central heating by 1°C, and you could be making a real impact on reducing your carbon footprint and your heating costs."
Double glazing works by using air or gas, such as argon, sealed between two panes of glass, to create an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss and noise. In recent years, glazing technology has become more advanced and the emphasis is on energy ratings, which have increased.
New energy-efficient double glazing helps to further conserve heat within the home and also allows more natural "free" energy - the warmth of the sun - in to heat the home.
The British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC), the UK's national system for rating energy-efficient windows, says: "You can save money on your energy bills if you install energy-efficient windows.
"If your home is single-glazed or your double-glazing was installed prior to April 2002 then you could be losing heat and, therefore money, literally out of the window. However, by switching to energy-efficient windows, you can save energy and reduce your household bills by as much as GBP461 per year."
Safestyle UK is the biggest independent provider of quality and affordable uPVC double glazing in Britain, with over 40 branches across the country. The company, which launched in 1992, has enjoyed rapid growth and installed more than GBP100million of energy-saving windows and doors across the UK last year.
